Pictured: October 2nd Chevron Refinery Fire

On October 2nd of last year, the Chevron El Segundo Refinery caught fire - releasing thick plumes of moke accross our community.

To this day, Chevron has released no information about what kinds of petroleum products or chemicals were burning and what kinds of toxic air we may have been exposed to as a result of their neglegence.

After seeing the fire in the news on my way home, and finding no information online about whether it was safe to go back home, I went to the top of El Segundo to see for myself if we were in the path of the wind.

Sure enough, all I could see was thick clouds of smoke from the burning refinery filling our neighborhood.

We have a RIGHT to know what pollutants are being released into the water we drink and the air we breathe.

I don't want to saddle companies with burdensome regulations. However,

PTFE, PFAS, & microplatics will be the asbestos of our generation.

We have allowed these toxic products into our lives - and they are poisioning us.

Companies are putting all kinds of toxic chemicals into products we buy, our land, and our water. By the time they are forced to clean up their pollution, shareholders have made their profits, and the company declares bankruptcy and shuts down.

Here is a selection of products you would never think contain PTFE/Teflon:
The Ink from Sharpie Markers contains Teflon/PFAS. I just found this out today.
Most computer mice ride on "skates" made of 100% Teflon/PTFE. As you use your mouse, small amounts of teflon are rubbed off onto your hands.
Many fast food packages are lined with PFAS to protect the cardboard from moisture. And exposing your food to these forever chemicals.

The price to clean up will far exceed the cost to stop the pollution at the source.
